Hi All,
Here's another installment for our blogs!! Some of you have seen this powerful video in class already, but I would love to further discuss it's effect on us throughout this week as well.
I have a few questions that might help direct our discussions as we go along.
1) What do you think about the portrayal of the video?
2) How do you feel about it's message? Are you surprised that this kind of thing still happens
today? Why?
3) The issue we talked about in class was about how basic human rights and workers rights were slowly formulated and championed by people in the Victorian era i.e. people like Charles
Dickens. How do you think we can be part of ending this problem in our era?
the video shows us the ugly truth..the reality that most peoplewould rather avoid just to live in their happy bubble....
ReplyDeleteIm not surprised...so many countries still suffer from 3rd world classification..for instance,India might have the richest people..but there is a gap between the rich and the poor is so massive that the "middle class" is practically non-existant..
I apologize for not attending the class...but this problem cannot be "completely" eradicated....but it can be decreased gradually over time...by everyone doing the little things that can save the unfortunate ones...
well the video clearly portayed how lucky we are right now without realizing it. We tend to complain life sucks in so many different ways without knowing there are ppl from the 3rd world is more suffering thn our "suck life".
ReplyDeletei'm not really surprised but the video had touch my heart deeply. People nowadays should realize problems such as 'FAT' is just a really TINY problem compare to those from 3rd world who are suffering every single second while we just sitting in front of the computer fb-ing and goyang kaki. LOL. Anyway, humans are greedy and selfish. We tend to want more even we already have it but never once volunteer to help out other because "this is none of my busness". sigh.
Yet the fact that there is a video trying to make people realize what's going on is sending us a message isn't it. It's saying we can make a difference with the talents we have and the abilities that are given to us.
ReplyDeleteI wonder what people like Dev and Ryan do one day when they become people of influence and people with the power to make a difference.
We all want heroes but the problem with imagining them is that we don't see it in ourselves. I'm not asking you all to put on a costume and fly. I think what's more important is how we can play our part.
Reading your responses really give me hope that one day our world will be a better place:) We do not have all the power in the world to change every thing but what we do have is the power to change ourselves and the people around us that's where we should start.
ReplyDeleteI suspect more people are doing amazing things in the world than we think and in truly interesting ways too.
There's a professor called Hans Rosling who does research on computer graphic data tools. Now you might think what the heck has his research got to do with poverty and third world conditions. Well alot actually cos most of the data is data about UN poverty statistics. He's a guy who knows that the research he does can be used for many things(especially in the business world) but it can also be use to spread awareness and help others. He's not a doctor, or a nun or some volunteer for the red cross he's a nerdy but brilliant professor who loves statistics but wants to use the knowledge he has to help change the world.
Check him out here
